Birmingham City Council is working to clear a significant backlog of uncollected waste, which peaked at 22,000 tonnes, by the weekend amidst an ongoing strike by bin workers. Strategic Director Craig Cooper highlighted efforts to prioritize the poorest areas affected. Striking workers, in the midst of ongoing negotiations with the union Unite, express frustration, as street cleanliness and proper waste management are at stake. Although household waste collection is back to normal for most residents, garden waste and recycling remain suspended until the resolution of the strike.
Craig Cooper, strategic director of city operations, stated, “We’re already back to collecting normal household waste this week. We are back into a position of good control.”
Mr Cooper emphasized, “The priority now is street cleansing and making sure the fly-tipping is at a manageable level,” as the council sought to address the backlog.
