The 28 Days Later franchise, which had previously ended on a bleak note with the Rage Virus spreading to Europe in 28 Weeks Later, is set to return with 28 Years Later. This new installment, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, will focus on the containment of the virus within Britain. Boyle confirms that while the events of the previous films remain canon, they have chosen a different narrative approach for this sequel, emphasizing a contraction rather than global expansion of the virus's reach.
"Obviously, what you could have done is you could have followed the direction of 28 Weeks Later, which is to take the virus into Europe. But... what had happened in the other movies and TV series [is] that expansion had happened in that way. And what we should do is contract back."
"In the years since 28 Days Later revitalized the zombie genre, zombie movies and shows have become all, ahem, rage. And like Boyle says, most of these franchises - from Zombieland to The Last of Us - show an entire world rendered a post-apocalyptic wasteland thanks to widespread zombie infection."
