Yellow Magic Orchestra's Haruomi Hosono announces new album, NYC & LA shows
"“I am now 78 years old, but from here on, I feel a growing curiosity toward the unknown music that my new self will create, while also embracing the music of my former self-as if I now carry two musical worlds within me.”"
"“It started with a simple question: how do you express the Japanese ideas of omoiyari (思い遣り), jihi (慈悲), or boseiai (母性愛) in English? I searched, but no word felt quite right,” Hosono says of the album's genesis. “Each came close, yet carried a slightly different nuance. Perhaps the nearest was 'compassion.' It is often translated as 'omoiyari' in Japanese, but its original meaning is 'to suffer together.'”"
"“In that sense, it may even seem like the opposite. The perspective, the emotional angle-subtly but fundamentally different. For that reason, I chose not to use 'compassion.' Instead, I turned to a more familiar word often used to close a letter: 'Sincerely.'”"
"“While no music has been shared yet, you can check out the Yours Sincerely artwork and tracklist below. Haruomi Hosono has announced release shows in NYC ( Radio City Music Hall on 9/16) and Los Angeles ( The Greek Theatre on 9/20) both of which are with Toro y Moi. Tickets go on sale Friday, May 22 at 10 AM local time.”"
Haruomi Hosono announced the solo album Yours Sincerely, releasing September 11 via Ghostly International. He described feeling curiosity toward unknown music created by his new self while embracing music from his former self, as if two musical worlds coexist. The album’s origin came from searching for English equivalents of Japanese ideas such as omoiyari, jihi, and boseiai. He found no word fully matched the nuances, noting that “compassion” can differ because omoiyari includes rejoicing together and a distinct emotional perspective. He chose “Sincerely,” a familiar closing phrase for letters. Release shows are scheduled in NYC and Los Angeles with Toro y Moi, with tickets going on sale May 22.
