Rae Smith, a celebrated yet underrecognized theatre designer, is showcasing her creative process in the exhibition "Worldly Wicked and Wise" at Queen's Park gallery. Her impressive portfolio includes designs for renowned productions such as "Hello Dolly!" and "War Horse," the latter of which earned her prestigious awards. Smith emphasizes the importance of her behind-the-scenes role in shaping theatrical environments. Throughout her three-decade career, she has collaborated significantly with playwright Conor McPherson and has maintained her commitment to live arts and imaginative storytelling, even in a male-dominated industry.
Coming up in a business as an outsider you have to run your own course. And as an artist you always have to throw yourself a gauntlet and expand your horizon.
I love the theatre and live arts, being a part of the process to imagine and create a whole visual world to support what the actors are doing.
