The Windmill pub, recognized in 1762, was situated in Market Place, Romford. It operated under various names, eventually becoming The Windmill and Bells in 1811. The venue provided livery and stables, with connections to local businesses. The pub’s license was voluntarily surrendered in 1906 to facilitate a new premises, leading to its closure in 1910. The building remained vacant until purchased by Stone & Son, culminating in its redevelopment into a department store that became Debenhams in 1973.
The first mention of The Windmill's existence in Market Place is recorded in a 1762 licensing record, marking its long-standing history in Romford.
Originally named The Windmill, the watering hole was changed to The Windmill and Bells in 1811, reflecting a rich local tradition of name derivation.
