One of London's greatest art institutions will be transformed by a vast immersive exhibition this summer
"Imaginary Worlds aren't concerned with predicting the future, instead they prepare us for it. Within their fictional streets and speculative landscapes, we rehearse new ways of living, new relationships between humans and machines, between cities and the living Earth, between extinction and survival. We can glimpse the beliefs that build worlds and those that end them."
"We have always learned about the future through stories. I am delighted to be able to present my first major UK solo exhibition experience at the Barbican and feel honoured to be joined by so many world class collaborators."
The Barbican Centre will present 'In Other Worlds,' a comprehensive immersive exhibition running from May 21 to September 6, 2026. BAFTA-nominated filmmaker and speculative futurist Liam Young curates this first major UK solo show, collaborating with creators from acclaimed productions including Westworld, Fallout, Blue Eye Samurai, Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Handmaid's Tale, and Andor. The exhibition spans three Barbican locations and features films, soundscapes, costumes, literature, and immersive installations. Artists, scientists, musicians, and costume designers contribute works exploring imagined futures and real ones, addressing themes of dystopia, science fiction, climate change, and science. Young emphasizes that imaginary worlds prepare audiences for the future by rehearsing new ways of living and relationships between humans, machines, cities, and the natural world.
