An oil painting, The Rising Squall, Hot Wells, rediscovered as an early work by JMW Turner, is set to be auctioned at Sotheby's. Originally attributed to Julius Caesar Ibbetson, it was lost for over 150 years until its signature was revealed during cleaning. Experts now endorse its attribution to Turner, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of his birth. The painting's history reflects a series of misattributions, highlighting the importance of accurate art documentation and scholarly examination in recognizing significant works within an artist’s portfolio.
"We are as certain as it's possible to be that this painting is by Turner," said Julian Gascoigne of Sotheby's, highlighting the strong scholarly consensus.
Turner's work was incorrectly attributed for over a century, incorrectly described as a watercolour and omitted from important early recordings of his art.
