The Bakerloo line trains, at 53 years old, are set to be replaced before 2030. Currently, they are 20 years past their intended retirement date. Transport for London (TfL) plans to order new trains due to a £2.2bn capital renewals program. The new trains will feature walk-through designs, air conditioning, and CCTV. However, infrastructure upgrades are necessary before these new trains can operate, delaying their introduction to the latter part of the decade. There is also public support for a Bakerloo line extension, which relies on replacing these outdated trains.
At 53 years old, Bakerloo line trains have needed to retire for some time now. In 2024, they were 20 years past their use by date.
TfL boss Andy Lord stated that the ordering of new Bakerloo line trains could start in the coming months, thanks to a £2.2bn new capital renewals program.
The new trains will be walk-through and air-conditioned featuring CCTV, similar to the new Piccadilly line trains currently being built.
There is a significant amount of infrastructure upgrade needed on the line before the new trains can start running.
