Mastodon recruit YouTuber Ben Eller for Tool festival set
Briefly

Mastodon recently had YouTuber and session guitarist Ben Eller step in for founding member Brent Hinds at their performance during Tool in the Sand festival. This transition occurred on short notice after Hinds announced his departure from the band. Eller, familiar with Mastodon's extensive catalog, took on the challenging role of covering Hinds' parts, including vocals, across a 17-song set. His impressive performance hints at a possible longer-term role as Mastodon's touring guitarist, especially with a busy 2025 tour schedule ahead.
Eller, who has more than a half-million YouTube subscribers, is already well-versed in Mastodon's material...his performance was pretty impressive, considering the long set and a few deep cuts.
Eller appeared to step in on short notice after Mastodon announced that Hinds, the band's guitarist and co-vocalist for 25 years, was exiting the band on Friday.
While no official announcement has been made, it appears that Eller could very well take over as Mastodon's touring guitarist for the time being, as the band has an extensive 2025 itinerary on the books.
Eller was tasked with the tall order of holding down Hinds' parts - including vocals - for a massive, career-spanning 17-song setlist.
