An LNER Azuma train conducted a test run from Leeds to London St Pancras early this morning, evaluating the feasibility of using St Pancras during closures on the East Coast Main Line. As part of safety checks, the train left the ECML at Doncaster and joined the Midland Main Line before arriving in St Pancras. Although customer operations are not ready yet, this test suggests an alternative routing to minimize travel disruptions during necessary engineering works.
Using a 9-car bi-mode LNER Azuma train, the unit (no. 800108) started its journey at Leeds, left the ECML at Doncaster, joined the Midland Main Line at Chesterfield, and terminated in London St Pancras.
While planned engineering work is vital in delivering infrastructure upgrades and keeping the rail network safe, it can be disruptive to customer journeys.
With this test, LNER is looking at how it can keep its customers on the move and minimise disruption to journeys when engineering work is being carried out.
This test proved the potential to use the station when the line into King’s Cross station is not available.
