Larry Lamb 'lucky' to land EastEnders and Gavin and Stacey roles
Larry Lamb said he was able to film early Gavin and Stacey episodes in 2006, then took the EastEnders role in 2007. He later worked on both series between London and Wales, which he called unusual for two major programmes. He attributed the dual casting partly to Barbara Windsor’s desire for him as her “new love interest.” Lamb had signed a contract to reprise his comedy role if it succeeded, then faced a choice when Gavin and Stacey gained popularity. He said he was eventually permitted to do both, despite “all sorts of problems.” He described the contrast between Mick Shipman and Archie Mitchell as “bizarre,” especially during the September Christmas special, when studio sets and costumes conflicted with the season. He also described rapid transitions between EastEnders war scenes and Gavin and Stacey filming logistics, including changing clothes and moving to a car.
"“Playing two people that were so diametrically opposed in terms of their characters, in terms of what they were like - it was bizarre,” he said. “Particularly when we were doing the Christmas special which always happened in September. “You're just over the summer and suddenly the whole studio is full of Christmas trees, tinsel, all piles of presents and everything else. “And so you're dressed up in deep winter gear, and it's boiling hot everywhere, so everything's all wonky.”"
