Kerry Godliman looks back: If my parents hadn't laughed so much at my jokes, I wouldn't be doing what I do now'
Briefly

Kerry Godliman, born in 1973 in London, is a comedian and actor educated at Rose Bruford Drama School and City Lit. She gained fame for her role as Hannah in Ricky Gervais's show Derek, along with appearances in Save Me and Trigger Point. Godliman also performs stand-up comedy and hosts the Memory Lane podcast with Jen Brister. She reflects on her childhood as suburban yet bohemian, influenced by her parents' unconventional careers. Godliman was passionately involved in youth theatre, which contributed to her creative development.
Being self-employed is all I knew. At the time this photo was taken, I was doing my GCSE retakes and about to start my A-levels. I may have failed some exams, but I don't remember being that stressed about it.
I was going through a 60s phase with the dress, the hair and the eyeliner, all of which was probably inspired by Deee-Lite. There would have been a lot of drinking and smoking and good music.
My childhood felt suburban and strait-laced, but my parents were quite bohemian. My dad was a violin-maker, and my mum dealt in secondhand clothes studying new things.
During my teen years, I was very committed to the local youth theatre in Ealing. It gave me a lot of my creative joy and a real sense of community.
