In the early 1980s, when Queen was on hiatus, Freddie Mercury sought creative direction and teamed up with Michael Jackson. The duo attempted to collaborate on three tracks, aiming to incorporate dance elements into Mercury's solo work. However, their sessions were disrupted when Jackson's pet llama caused Mercury to leave the studio in frustration. Despite the unfinished tracks, Mercury released solo material from his project 'Mr. Bad Guy' in 1985, showcasing his newfound creative freedom outside of Queen's influence.
I think the last straw was when Michael brought his pet llama into the studio. I think Freddie sort of took umbrage to that.
Mercury rang me and said, 'Miami, dear, can you get over here? You've got to get me out of here, I'm recording with a llama.'
It was all part of the creative freedom that Mercury was enjoying and experiencing for the first time on his debut solo project apart from Queen.
He just did something he liked from the bottom of his heart ... what he wanted it to be, without being talked into maybe a bit more guitars, or.
