An outdoor pool and boardwalk are planned for Athlone’s recreational attractions at Friary Strand. A preferred site option was selected after a second public consultation held at Athlone Civic Centre. Fáilte Ireland provided more than €500,000 for design and planning of the public recreational facility. The location was chosen because of strong walking, cycling, and public transport connections. The regeneration initiative will connect the Athlone Dublin Greenway to Burgess Park and introduce a new urban swimming facility on the River Shannon. The project is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the EU Just Transition Fund.
