At 53, the author pledged to explore all 54 African nations by 60, realizing his limited understanding of Africa despite his expertise in African culture. This journey was sparked by a visit to Cape Town during a theatre tour in 2015, which forced him to confront his knowledge gap. Traveling through diverse nations, he encountered narratives of peace and creativity, contrasting with stereotypes of instability. These experiences became the foundation for a new theatrical project, 54.60 Africa, aiming to share the continent's rich and nuanced stories.
Despite my Nigerian ancestry and theatrical expertise, my understanding of Africa remained frustratingly limited. Cape Town offered me an opportunity to begin addressing that knowledge gap.
Each encounter across 54 nations challenged global narratives of crime and instability, revealing instead peace and tranquility in bustling districts and modernity in airports.
