On this Sunday, South Western Railway will become the inaugural train company to be nationalised under the UK government's plan to shift passenger services into public hands. It will be operated by the DfT Operator, a public sector entity previously managing several franchises. This transition follows the pandemic's disruptions and aims to consolidate multiple train operators under the new Great British Railways framework, which will streamline operations and improve service coordination across the rail network.
South Western Railway will become the first train company to be nationalised as part of the UK government's initiative to transition passenger services to public ownership.
From Sunday, operations will be run by a new public sector operator, which will be a subsidiary of the government’s holding company, DfT Operator.
Currently, the DfT Operator Group represents 15% of total passenger journeys and has posted a revenue of £3.5 billion for the year ending March 2024.
Future plans include the transfer of other train companies into public ownership, leading to the eventual establishment of Great British Railways.
