Morrisons is set to close 52 in-store cafes, along with other services, as part of strategic changes announced by Chief Executive Rami Baitieh. This plan includes the shuttering of 18 Market Kitchens, 17 convenience stores, and several counter services, affecting 365 jobs. Baitieh emphasized that these measures aim to refocus investments on areas that hold true value for customers, citing specific local challenges for the cafes. While the closures signal a significant shift, the company strives to transition affected employees into alternative roles, aiming to minimize disruption.
The changes we are announcing today are a necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons and enable us to focus our investment into the areas that customers really value and that can play a full part in our growth.
Although these changes are relatively small in the context of the overall scale of the Morrisons business, we do not take lightly the disruption and uncertainty they will cause to some of our colleagues.
