London pedicabs to be regulated amid public concern over safety, noise and cost
Briefly

Transport for London (TfL) is advancing plans to regulate pedicabs following a public consultation that revealed strong support for oversight. The survey indicated over 95% of respondents favored background checks and insurance for drivers, with more than 75% feeling unsafe using these vehicles. Despite some viewing pedicabs as a vibrant part of nightlife, many customers have reported being overcharged. TfL plans to implement licensing next year, with officials advocating for a balance between maintaining fun experiences while safeguarding the public's interests.
Pedicabs have become an ever more common sight in the capital, including the garish party cycle rickshaws, known for playing loud music and fleecing tourists.
More than 95% of the 7,700 people who responded said pedicab drivers should pass UK criminal background checks, be insured, and have their music kept in check.
Regulation could not come soon enough, adding: For far too long, members of the public have been at the mercy of rogue operators.
Pedicabs should be a fun and sustainable way to explore what our city has to offer, but without regulation some drivers are behaving unsafely or anti-socially.
