"Founder Ravinder Bhogal was born in Kenya to Indian parents and raised in London; the influences of her varied background are woven into both the menu at Jikoni and her popular cookbook of the same name. Well-known for many years in its Marylebone location, my expectations were already high for this 2025 visit, and I was pleased to discover that the innovative blend of culinary traditions that first put Jikoni on the map remains alive and well."
"Busy on a midweek evening, Jikoni has a warm and welcoming decor, with references to East Africa and the Indian subcontinent blending into the restaurant's compact upper floor, along with the gentle hubbub of diners' conversations. Woven African baskets acting as light shades are a nice touch. We were warmly greeted by the Jikoni staff, who took time to carefully explain the dishes on the menu along with stories of their origins, and enthusiastically recommended their favourites."
"Starting with the drinks menu, the wine list is impressively extensive, and the dinner menu offers a wide range of house cocktails, including the Pomegranate Negroni and the Pickled Melon Highball, as well as sober specials such as the Pickled Melon Cooler and the Kewra Cola. A selection of beers and spirits was also available, including a 0% ale for those who do not drink alcohol."
Jikoni's menu traverses South Asia, the Far East, the Middle East, East Africa and the UK, elevating everyday ingredients and techniques. Founder Ravinder Bhogal's Kenyan birth, Indian heritage and London upbringing inform both the restaurant menu and the cookbook of the same name. The Marylebone location maintains an innovative fusion of culinary traditions across small plates and starters. The compact upper floor features warm, welcoming decor with East African and Indian references and woven African basket light shades. Staff provide attentive explanations of dishes and their origins and recommend favourites. The drinks offering includes an extensive wine list, inventive cocktails, sober specials and a 0% ale option.
