At Claridge's hotel in London, sculptor Frances Segelman created a bust of Judi Dench live, transforming a large lump of clay into an impressive sculpture over three hours. The event raised more than £20,000 for lymphoedema research, with hopes of doubling that amount when the piece is cast in bronze. Segelman, known for her dynamic live sculpting sessions, combined artistry and warmth, while Dench charmed the audience, lending her celebrity power to the charitable cause. The atmosphere celebrated both art and philanthropy immensely.
It began as a blob: a 12kg lump of clay the size of a watermelon. Three hours later, it had become Judi Dench's head, 50% larger than usual.
Ticket sales raised over 20,000 and it's hoped that, when it's cast in bronze, the finished piece will fetch double that.
The pair began a little before the audience arrived, sitting on a platform in the hotel's mirrored, slightly chilly art deco ballroom.
She was so sweet and kind and she never moved' Frances Segelman and Judi Dench.
