Greggs heads abroad with first international airport store in Tenerife
"The move represents a rare overseas venture for the Newcastle-founded bakery giant, which has focused overwhelmingly on rapid expansion across the UK in recent years. Greggs previously operated outlets in Belgium in 2008, though those locations were later closed as the company retreated from international expansion. The Tenerife opening is now being viewed as a cautious test of overseas appetite for the brand, particularly among British tourists already familiar with the chain."
Greggs will open its first international store at Tenerife South Airport in the international departures area. The outlet will be the company’s first overseas expansion since brief operations in Belgium nearly two decades ago. Tenerife is described as an ideal testing location due to the large number of British tourists using the airport. The airport serves about 13 million passengers annually, with roughly half travelling to or from the UK. The shop will sell savoury bakes, breakfast rolls, sandwiches, and sweet treats, plus Spanish-specific additions such as a Spanish omelette breakfast roll and freshly squeezed orange juice made daily. Seating for up to 92 customers will support its role as a low-cost option for travellers before departure.
