Gentleman's Relish is toast after its maker axes the pungent anchovy spread
"Jeremy King instructed his chef to create a version of Gentleman's Relish almost identical to the real thing for the 198-year-old London restaurant. King stated, 'We actually make our own, due to the difficulty in obtaining, so are able to continue to serve it.'"
"King's chef adapted a classic Victorian recipe for patum peperium, the proper name for Gentleman's Relish. He noted, 'It is similar to mass-produced versions, but dare I say, I prefer it.'"
"Some customers ordered the relish with tears in their eyes, highlighting its emotional significance. King mentioned, 'I would like to be able to sell it as a takeaway product but sadly we can't as that would require all sorts of health and safety packaging and labelling.'"
Gentleman's Relish, a traditional British condiment, is being discontinued, causing disappointment among fans. Jeremy King, owner of Simpson's in the Strand, has developed a similar version using a classic Victorian recipe. This homemade relish has become popular at the restaurant, which serves it on toast. King expressed a desire to offer it as a takeaway but faces packaging and labeling challenges. Fortnum & Mason will also continue to produce a version of the relish, priced at 14.95.
