Charing Cross station to shut for three weeks this summer in 20m rail upgrade
"The shutdown will affect both London Charing Cross and Waterloo East stations from Sunday 26th July to Sunday 16th August 2026, along with some additional weekend closures either side of the main works. During the closure, no trains will serve either station while engineers replace almost two kilometres of 36-year-old track, rebuild sections of platform at Charing Cross, upgrade drainage systems and carry out structural repairs to both the Waterloo East pedestrian bridge and the Hungerford railway bridge over the Thames."
"Southeastern services that would normally run into Charing Cross will instead be diverted to London Victoria, Cannon Street and Blackfriars, while some trains will terminate at London Bridge. Passengers will be able to use their tickets on alternative rail routes, London Underground services and London Buses at no extra cost. Those making shorter journeys are also being encouraged to walk or cycle where possible."
"The works are part of a wider investment programme aimed at improving reliability and reducing future disruption on one of the busiest parts of the Southeastern network. The £20 million investment will see 1990s track and platforms upgraded to make journeys safer and more reliable, and Victorian era structures strengthened to remain fit for the future."
"By consolidating the work into 22‑day closure, supported by preparation and follow‑up weekends, we can complete the work more quickly and with less disruption overall than the alternative options of 60 weekend closures or four to five 9-day closures. Customers are being advised to plan ahead and check before travelling during the closure period."
