Auguste is a new Italian restaurant in Hackney named after a clown, with an Edward Hopper painting of a masked figure in a cafe setting a tone of quiet tragedy beneath a calm surface. The 32-seat premises were previously Papi, an irreverent European small-plates and low-intervention wine spot that moved to a larger site. Auguste keeps the same general atmosphere but shifts the menu toward Abruzzo influences, especially arrosticini. These are grilled meat skewers made from 1cm cubes cooked over a furnacella, reflecting a live-fire trend. Shortly after opening, the restaurant was packed, with the former Papi crowd seemingly continuing their visits.
