""Straightaway he came to my cabin and started banging on the window. He was verbally abusive and increasingly aggressive,""
""The passenger managed to break the driver cabin door and came inside. He started punching me on my forehead and ears, demanding money for the food and drink," the driver said. "At first I told him I couldn't give him any money, but he continued. I gave him whatever I had and finally he started moving out of the bus. But then a lady who was with him came and hit me on my forehead.""
""committed to doing all we can to protect our colleagues""
Unite urged Transport for London to increase protections after a Freedom of Information request showed 818 physical assaults and hate crimes on London bus drivers in 2024, a 20.5% rise on the previous year. Drivers reported 431 incidents by mid‑August in the current year. A late‑night driver described being attacked after a passenger blamed him for spilled food and drink; the assault alarm reportedly drew no immediate help and the passenger breached the driver cabin to punch him while an accomplice struck his forehead. TfL stated it is committed to protecting colleagues and encouraged reporting of abuse.
