Tracey Emin voices TfL disabilities announcements
"Through my own experiences of cancer, which led me to having a stoma, I know just how much of an impact a health condition or disability can have on something like standing on a train."
"Any one of us can have a health condition or disability, and because many of these don't have outward cues, that might mean people miss out on things that would really help them, like getting a seat on public transport."
"If you're out and about in London, please do offer your seat if you don't need it yourself you never know what a difference you could make."
"Difficulties on public transport were not always visible but could be "distressing", adding that "a small act of kindness like offering a seat can have a significant impact"."
Transport for London is running Priority Seating Week to raise awareness of non-visible disabilities and encourage travellers to look around before keeping a seat. Dame Tracey Emin recorded new London Tube announcements urging people to offer seats if they do not need them, noting that health conditions and disabilities may not show outward signs. She linked the message to her own experience with bladder cancer, life-saving surgery, and living with a stoma bag, describing how such conditions can affect standing on trains. The campaign will play at central Underground stations and bus stations until 17 May, and includes network events and accessibility stickers on DLR train doors.
