"I don't make necklaces that cost $10 million. I make jewellery that people wear, literally, every day. I chose not to do that many years ago. I've not ever had someone who's come to me and said, I've been mugged for my Stephen Webster jewellery'. Never."
"You're an idiot. It will attract the wrong kind of attention and can make you a target."
"Between 2019 and 2024, 29,000 watches were reported stolen to the Metropolitan Police, with one in five of those thefts involving violence."
Top Mayfair jeweller Stephen Webster warns that London is too dangerous to flaunt high-value watches or jewellery because of robbery and violence. Webster says many celebrities have worn his rings, necklaces and bracelets but advises Londoners to be smart when wearing jewellery in public to avoid attracting dangerous attention. Webster designs wearable, everyday pieces rather than multimillion-dollar necklaces and reports no customers mugged specifically for his jewellery. A Watch Register survey found nearly half of UK luxury watch owners feel nervous about wearing watches publicly. Metropolitan Police data show 29,000 watches reported stolen between 2019 and 2024, with one in five thefts involving violence, and an increase in incidents at high-end venues and affluent neighbourhoods.
