"The mausoleum was designed by his wife in the shape of the tent they had spent so much time in while travelling around the Middle East, featuring a ladder at the back and a glass window to peer into the tomb itself."
"Following two years of restoration work, the door can be unlocked once again, allowing limited public access to the mausoleum for the first time in decades."
"Visitors will be encouraged to enter the tomb three at a time, with tours limited to 10 people due to size restrictions and a narrow entry."
The Burton Mausoleum in Mortlake, housing the remains of explorer Sir Richard Burton, will open for public tours after being closed for nearly 70 years. Designed by his wife, the mausoleum resembles a tent and includes a ladder and a glass window. Following two years of restoration by Habitats & Heritage, the door can be unlocked again. Tours are limited to 10 people, with three allowed inside at a time. The mausoleum is located in the churchyard of St Mary Magdalen Roman Catholic Church and is generally open from 9am to 3pm.
