A legend claimed Thomas Hardy arranged displaced headstones during railway expansion in the 1860s, but historians found the stones were piled during later site clearances and an ash seed sprouted through the mound in the mid-20th century. In 2014, biologists identified a destructive parasitic fungus infecting the tree. Weakened by disease and winter storms, the trunk snapped and collapsed on December 27, 2022, while the gravestones remained unharmed. Authorities planted a new ash tree in spring 2024 to preserve the site’s legacy.
