More than 500 towns are participating in the government's Safer Streets scheme, which targets shoplifting and antisocial behaviour. The summer initiative, running from July to September, will increase police patrols and assign a named officer to each community. Enforcement powers will be heightened to ban criminals from hotspots. East London towns, including Romford and Ilford, are part of this strategy aimed at reducing theft and street crime, while also providing activities for local youth during the summer holidays.
Home secretary Yvette Cooper stated, 'I have called on police forces and councils alike to work together to deliver a summer blitz on town centre crime to send a clear message to those people who bring misery to our towns that their crimes will no longer go unpunished.'
The summer crackdown promises to increase police patrols in town centres, with a named, contactable officer in every community, focusing on shoplifting and antisocial behaviour.
