South London currently has relatively few large running events despite a visible running culture. East London already hosts multiple popular races, including a sold-out Hackney half and a new Shoreditch event. Merton Council and the Great Run Company will stage a 13.1-mile half marathon in spring 2027, with an expected first-field of 9,000 runners. The closed-road route will pass Wimbledon Village, the Wimbledon Championships site, Morden, Mitcham and several local parks. Organisers estimate a £1.7 million boost to the borough's economy. Final approval and race details await council cabinet sign-off.
