Race to buy historic Ye Olde Swiss Cottage after pub placed on sale following sudden closure
"A historic pub in north London is racing to find a buyer after it was put up for sale following its sudden closure. This sets a six-month deadline for takeover bids under the terms of its asset of community value protection under planning laws. It means that a community interest group can formalise an offer before Sarah Elizabeth Atkinson, the pub's landlord, can list it on the open market."
"Our vision is to bring the pub back to its heyday as a pub and as a community asset for all, and to bring back the soul to Swiss Cottage. Whilst we don't have a spare few million in our back pockets, we hope to widely publicise this opportunity in the hope someone with money and imagination will come forward to preserve the community value of this famous old watering hole."
A historic Swiss Cottage pub has closed suddenly and the property has been placed on the market, triggering a six-month moratorium under asset of community value (ACV) rules that allows community groups to register takeover bids. The Belsize Society has lodged an expression of interest and aims to restore the pub as a community asset while seeking an investor to preserve its character. More than 2,000 people have signed an online petition calling for reopening. The pub dates back to the 1830s, received a chalet-style refit in the 1980s, and is linked to the naming of Swiss Cottage Underground station. The local council says the moratorium prevents the owner exchanging contracts except to a community interest group, after which the owner may freely dispose of the property. Samuel Smith Old Brewery has been contacted for comment.
