Phone snatching down 30% in Square Mile as City of London Police begin Christmas crime crackdown
"Over the festive season, we're expecting a large number of visitors coming into the Square Mile to enjoy everything it has to offer. Our dedicated teams will be out in force across the City, working to a zero-tolerance of criminal behaviour and ready to help wherever needed. We're committed to tackling violence against women and girls, it will not be tolerated and it is not acceptable. We want you to know that we are doing all we can to make you feel safe."
"Nobody should be made to feel unsafe. Our dedicated teams will be out in force across the City, working to a zero tolerance of criminal behaviour and ready to help wherever needed. Our officers will also be using covert and overt tactics to tackle acquisitive crimes such as bag thefts and phone snatching. These crimes have significant impact on victims and we're determined to prevent them."
Phone snatching in the City of London fell by 30% between April and October compared with the same period last year. Police recorded 413 stolen phones in the first seven months of this year, down from 597 during the same period last year. City of London Police will use a mix of covert and high-visibility tactics to deter offenders and support victims. Dedicated teams will patrol the Square Mile with a zero-tolerance approach to criminal behaviour and a focus on tackling violence against women and girls. A bus outside Liverpool Street Station operates Thursday to Saturday evenings with officers and a medic, running until 3am this month. A Winter of Action from 1 December 2025 to 31 January 2026 will coordinate police, councils and businesses to protect high streets and build on the Safer Streets Summer Initiative.
