Patients evacuated after unknown chemical smell' at Newham Hospital A&E ward

Newham Hospital was evacuated on February 27 due to reports of an unknown chemical smell. Emergency services, including the fire brigade and hazardous response teams, quickly responded to the incident. Patients, staff, and families were safely evacuated from the area, particularly from the paediatric A&E department. After conducting thorough checks, no elevated levels of chemical substances were found, and the scene was declared safe by around 10pm. Fortunately, while four individuals were treated at the hospital, no one was harmed during the evacuation.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: We were called at 1958 yesterday (27 February) to a report of an unknown chemical smell at a hospital on Glen Road in Plaistow. The area was evacuated and a cordon was implemented as a precaution. Specialist officers carried out a monitoring sweep and found no elevated readings of chemical substances. Crews ensured the area was safe before leaving the scene. Four people were treated by staff at the hospital.
