One of London's most popular cinemas has big plans to safeguard its future
Briefly

Genesis cinema in Mile End, London, is set to undergo a major transformation, incorporating student housing into its new plans. The existing cinema will be rebuilt into a modern four-screen picturehouse while adding 200-300 student units. Owner Tyrone Walker-Hebborn is optimistic about expanding to a mini-chain of cinemas as a strategic response to declining ticket sales amid post-pandemic challenges. The renovation aims to maintain the original essence of Genesis while upgrading its facilities to appeal to future audiences and sustain operations.
'This a five-year plan, so it's early days,' says Genesis owner Tyrone Walker-Hebborn, 'but we're looking for other sites to either operate temporarily or make into another Genesis.'
'We've always been approached by people wanting to buy it and turn it into residential, which has never been my thing,' he says.
'You'll walk in and feel like it's Genesis straight away,' says Walker-Hebborn. 'I love this building [and] we're making it fit for purpose for the next generation.'
