The City of London approved revised plans for an office block at 85 Gracechurch Street following the finding of a Roman basilica beneath the site. The building will be reduced to 30 storeys from the original 32 and will feature a public exhibition of the basilica, dated to late 70s or early 80s AD, found during investigations by the Museum of London Archaeology. The plan also includes a public walkway with views of Leadenhall Market and an increase of approximately 27,000 square meters of office space.
Sophie Jackson, director of development at MOLA, stated, 'Finding substantial remains of the basilica is one of the most remarkable discoveries made in the City in recent years, and it has been described as the equivalent to discovering the Speaker's Chair in the Chamber of the House of Commons in 2,000 years' time.'
Ron Hertshten, chief executive of Hertshten Properties, mentioned that the development intends to embrace the City of London's history while providing modern office space.
