New DLR station back on track as long-delayed housing scheme finally moves forward
"The development side, Thameside West, has now been majority bought by the property developer, Regal Arada, and they say that construction on the first phase of the project will start in 2027. In total, it will deliver 5,000 new homes in the empty ex-industrial land underneath the Cable Car on the north side of the Thames, of which 35% will be offered as affordable housing."
"As for the DLR station, a TfL Programmes & Investment committee meeting in March 2025 confirmed that TfL is working with a potential delivery partner and funders, and progress has been made on updating the feasibility study for the new DLR station at Thames Wharf. Based on the 2018 feasibility study, which may well have changed since then, the new DLR station could include stairs from street to platform level and 17-person lifts at the eastern end."
A new DLR station, likely called Thames Wharf, could be built roughly midway between Canning Town and West Silvertown on the Woolwich branch. A deliberately straight length of track and station-style track bed exist at the location. The Thameside West development has been majority-bought by Regal Arada, with first-phase construction due to start in 2027 and a total of 5,000 homes planned, 35% affordable. TfL is working with potential delivery partners and funders and updating a feasibility study that envisioned stairs and 17-person lifts, with scope for additional lifts or escalators later. South access will serve the new homes; north access will link to the Royal Docks and City Hall.
