National Maritime Museum's glass-roofed court reopening in June
Briefly

The National Maritime Museum will reopen its Ocean Court on June 7, 2024, after extensive renovations. The refurbished area features over 23,000 square feet of sun-protected glazing, which helps control temperature and improve visitor experience. A new floor map, the Spilhaus Projection, emphasizes the significance of oceans, steering away from traditional Mercator projections. Additionally, impactful artifacts like a piece of the MV Sea Empress's hull and the binnacle from the Greenpeace vessel Rainbow Warrior will showcase human impact on marine environments, deepening public awareness of ocean conservation.
The world is 71% ocean, but you wouldn't know it from looking at a standard world map. What's great about the new Ocean Map is that it encourages us to consider the world from a different perspective, one which reclaims the importance of the ocean on which we all depend.
The new Spilhaus Projection, or a map of the world according to fish, shows one, interconnected ocean, representing ocean depth and key features including the Mariana Trench and Great Barrier Reef.
