London's Pocket Parks: St Thomas's Recreation Ground, E9
Briefly

A hidden pocket park in Hackney, formerly the St Thomas's Square Chapel graveyard, features a large gateway originally designed for carriage access. The park was converted into a public space in the early 1890s following proposals to transform local graveyards. The area is primarily a lawn adorned with bedding and remains of gravestones, with an intriguing mock-Tudor shed adding to its charm and neglect. Despite its shrouded history, the park offers a unique glimpse into Hackney's past and invites exploration.
The graveyard seemed to have been turned into a public space in the early 1890s, with the first proposal coming in April 1892 to convert several local graveyards into open parks.
In an odd way we have a graveyard for a church that no longer exists, and a church that doesn't have a graveyard.
