London Transport Museum adding new exhibitions galleries
"With the Museum's 50th birthday on the horizon in 2030, this is the perfect time to take stock of where we want to be in another fifty years and be ambitious about how we can make our fantastic museum fit for the future. We're prioritising upgrades to key visitor areas and amenities, including our recently opened Platform media gallery, and the development of a new flexible studio space that will primarily host our learning and education sessions."
"The new space will be a medium-sized room of approximately 840 square feet, next to the stairs and lift, with a new entrance facing the museum for public access. Although it will be available for pop-up displays, the museum expects its main function will be to provide additional space for its educational work and collaboration with local groups, freeing up space elsewhere in the museum."
The London Transport Museum is expanding its public spaces by converting internal staff areas into visitor-facing galleries and facilities. A ground floor space has been converted into a quiet area and cinema room, while a first-floor office will become an approximately 840 square-foot education and community gallery adjacent to the posters gallery. This new flexible studio space will primarily host learning and education sessions while remaining available for pop-up displays. The revamp includes a dedicated meeting room for volunteers and plans to redesign the main staircase for improved visibility. These upgrades support the museum's mission as an education and heritage charity, with director Elizabeth McKay emphasizing the importance of preparing the museum for its 50th anniversary in 2030.
