Knock flying high at 40: 'It's the best airport in the world. It's a different kind of vibe'
"Monsignor Horan, decked in his customary black cassock with amaranth red piping, buttons and sash, declares theatrically: 'What do you think is going on? We are building an airport.'"
"There is a gentle but unmistakable tone of incredulity to the question posed by RTÉ's Jim Fahy. It is an overcast day on an isolated, barren hilltop in rural east Mayo."
Knock Airport opened in May 1986, driven by Monsignor James Horan's vision. Journalist Eavan Murray revisited the airport nearly four decades later, engaging with long-serving staff and frequent flyers, including a Hollywood star. The atmosphere during the airport's construction was filled with excitement and disbelief, as captured in a conversation between RTÉ's Jim Fahy and Monsignor Horan, who confidently proclaimed the airport's establishment amidst the rural landscape of Mayo.
