Huge fire breaks out at south London tower block - 70 firefighters race to scene

Around 70 firefighters responded to a fire in a south London tower block, dispatching ten fire engines to the scene. The fire originated on the 11th floor of the building on Hillingdon street, with the cause under investigation. Residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed as smoke filled the area. Fire crews controlled the flames by around 3pm, although visible damage was left in the building. The London Fire Brigade received over 40 calls as the fire was seen from across London, with warnings to avoid the area while firefighters handled remaining hot spots.

Firefighters managed to get the flames under control by around 3pm, but parts of the building were visibly damaged by the fire.
Station Commander Tony Perks reported that the fire was very visible, prompting more than 40 emergency calls and heavy area traffic.
