"Upgrading our camera network is vital to maintaining strong, consistent enforcement, and together with the Met we are using every tool available to deter speeding, reduce road danger and save lives."
"The kit combines a high resolution camera and sensor technology which make them more reliable and effective than standard cameras and produce better quality images. Most speed cameras can currently only detect speeding across three lanes of traffic travelling in one direction."
"It is, however, worth noting that average speeds in London are below 20 mph, so we would also like to see enforcement focus on things like drivers illegally using mobile phones at the wheel alongside these new trials."
Transport for London is introducing high-tech speed cameras using advanced 4D imaging radar technology across nine London locations to improve road safety. These cameras can detect speeding across five lanes of bi-directional traffic without flashing or requiring road markings, capturing distance, elevation, and direction data. The technology produces higher quality images and is more reliable than standard cameras that only monitor three lanes in one direction. Trials are occurring in areas including Haringey, Tower Hamlets, Havering, Croydon, and others with 20mph or 30mph speed limits. The initiative, conducted with the Metropolitan Police under the Vision Zero strategy, aims to maintain consistent enforcement and reduce road casualties. The Institute of Advanced Motorists supports the technology but recommends enforcement also address mobile phone use while driving.
