Ban on dangerous car meetups in north London extended
"The stunts and racing presents a real risk of injury and death to the people standing close to the vehicle. Many of these stunts are performed by inexperienced drivers, cheered on and encouraged by the crowd to go faster and faster. The disturbance caused to the local community is huge, the noise created by these stunts will travel considerable distances, over half a mile. The sound of the exhausts is comparable to a shotgun continuously firing in a built up area."
"The ban stops people from gathering to engage in, participate in, promote or organise motor racing, motor stunts or other forms of dangerous driving on Enfield's roads and public spaces"
"We have been able to demonstrate that this injunction has a positive impact on road safety and community wellbeing. We are absolutely committed to using all available legal powers to create safer streets and to protect our residents."
An injunction banning unauthorised car cruising, organised racing and motor stunts in Enfield has been extended for another year. The injunction prohibits gathering to engage in, promote, organise or participate in dangerous driving on public roads and spaces and gives police extra powers to arrest and tackle associated antisocial behaviour. Hundreds of spectators travelled to meets, sometimes from the Midlands, and police linked driving traits at meets to several fatal crashes. Council leaders say the measure reduces speeding, noise pollution and dangerous driving and improves road safety and community wellbeing.
