"The Royal Observatory is a beacon of science and learning, and a World Heritage Site of national and international importance, so we are delighted that thanks to National Lottery players this magical place will continue to inspire for generations to come. It speaks strongly to our vision for heritage to be valued, cared for and sustained for everyone, now and in the future."
"A key feature of the plans is a new access tower, including a lift, which will allow visitors to reach the Great Equatorial Telescope for the first time. At the southern end, a purpose-built exhibition space will provide room for new heritage displays, while an entrance pavilion by Jamie Fobert Architects will make the entrance to the site much more obvious to visitors."
The Royal Observatory on Greenwich Hill will receive a £9.7 million National Lottery Heritage Fund grant as part of a £77 million redevelopment to improve access across the hillside campus. The project will establish an elevated walkway across the garden, landscaped step-free paths, and a new access tower with a lift to provide visitor access to the Great Equatorial Telescope for the first time. A purpose-built southern exhibition space will host new heritage displays, and an entrance pavilion by Jamie Fobert Architects will make the site entrance more prominent. The scheme aims to open the World Heritage Site to a much wider public, with phase one starting in November.
