Statue of Celtic legend Tommy Gemmell unveiled
"This has always been about more than a statue. It's about bringing Tommy home and celebrating him in the community he loved so much. I can't thank everyone enough for the support, the fundraising and the kindness shown throughout this whole journey."
"I was lucky enough to call Tommy a close friend for many years. We travelled together, did business together, and spent hours talking, not just about football, but about Craigneuk. He never forgot his roots. He cared deeply about this area and the people in it."
"Gemmell was a member of the Lisbon Lions side that won the European Cup in 1967 and scored in the final victory over Internazionale. He also scored in the 1970 final, which Celtic lost to Dutch side Feyenoord, and spent a decade at the club between 1961 and 1971."
Tommy Gemmell, a legendary Celtic left back and member of the 1967 Lisbon Lions European Cup-winning team, has been commemorated with a statue in his hometown of Craigneuk, North Lanarkshire. Gemmell scored in the 1967 European Cup final victory over Internazionale and also in the 1970 final loss to Feyenoord. During his decade at Celtic from 1961 to 1971, he played over 240 games and won 15 major honors, earning 18 Scotland caps. The statue, designed by artist Andy Edwards, features a plaque inscribed "Tommy Gemmell, Man of Steel," referencing the local Ravenscraig Steelworks. Gemmell, who died in 2017 at age 73, later played for Nottingham Forest, in the United States, and Dundee, where he won the League Cup in 1973.
