Felix Zwayer, the referee for the Europa League final between Manchester United and Tottenham, has a controversial history, including a six-month ban linked to a match-fixing scandal. In 2005, he reported a scheme orchestrated by Robert Hoyzer, refusing to manipulate match results. Despite his whistleblowing, Zwayer faced repercussions, such as a ban for accepting money from Hoyzer. He resumed officiating in 2009 and became a FIFA-listed referee. His past resurfaced after notable incidents, including a clash with Jude Bellingham in a high-stakes match for Borussia Dortmund.
When I got this firm offer from Hoyzer, I went to my refereeing colleagues. I stress once again that I strongly rejected this offer straightaway.
I have a clear conscience, and I can sleep well because I know I didn't tamper with the game.
Zwayer served his ban and took charge of his first top-flight match in 2009, before becoming a FIFA-listed referee three years later.
News of the Berlin-born official's suspension only came to light in 2014.
