Retired Premier League footballer Kevin Campbell passed away at age 54 due to natural causes linked to heart and kidney failure. The inquest at Manchester Coroner's Court revealed that he was critically unwell when admitted to Manchester Royal Infirmary, having lost significant weight over months. While no underlying issue was initially identified, further evaluation suggested missed diagnoses may have occurred. Despite a prior exit from the hospital deemed satisfactory, he was readmitted and subsequently died, prompting a hospital investigation into patient safety and possible delays in care.
Mr Campbell was 'desperately unwell' when he was admitted to hospital, having lost more than half of his body weight and facing severe health issues.
Coroner Zak Golombek noted that 'missed opportunities' to diagnose infective endocarditis 'not more than minimally contributed to his death' on balance of probabilities.
