Century of Louth derby wins eludes Dundalk again as Drogheda United dig deep for draw
Drogheda United salvaged a draw against neighbours Dundalk for the second time this season after coming from behind. Dundalk started quickly but failed to convert chances, especially after Drogheda had suffered two consecutive defeats, including a loss to bottom club Waterford. Drogheda made changes due to injuries, with Leo Burney partnering Andrew Quinn in defence, while Kevin Doherty served a suspension. Dundalk’s Daryl Horgan fouled Ryan Brennan in the opening seconds, but Enda Minogue made key saves as Drogheda dominated the first half. Dundalk took the lead in the 18th minute through Gbemi Arubi after a pass from Aodh Dervin. Drogheda created further chances through Eoin Kenny and Tyreke Wilson, hitting the post and forcing more saves from Talley.
"Once again the Lilywhites came out of the blocks quicker but couldn't put away their dogged rivals and after two consecutive defeats for Drogheda - including one against bottom club Waterford - this will feel like a decent result against the team who impressively dismantled the champions Shamrock Rovers seven nights earlier."
"The hosts had Daire Doyle in the managerial hot seat as Kevin Doherty was serving a one-match suspension following on from his red card in the controversial loss at the RSC, and there were changes on the field too as Leo Burney partnered Andrew Quinn at the heart of the defence due to injuries to talisman Conor Keeley and James Bolger."
"They made it count with a goal in just the 18th minute when Leo Burney got in a tangle with Horgan just outside the box, allowing Aodh Dervin's pass to reach Gbemi Arubi. Dundalk's top scorer showed his strength to hold off Quinn before stroking the ball low past keeper Fynn Talley."
"The Boynesiders then enjoyed a slice of luck when goal attempts by Horgan and Kenny were blocked by Talley and Conor Kane respectively, before Tyreke Wilson's follow-up struck the butt of the post and Talley saved again from goalscorer Arubi."
