Diogo Jota traveled from Portugal to England by car and ferry on medical advice after a minor lung operation, then died in an accident on 3 July 2025 along with his brother Andre Silva while en route to Santander, Spain. Jota’s death came 11 days after teammates attended his wedding to the mother of his three children. Liverpool’s May title celebrations were previously interrupted when a driver hit crowds, injuring 134 people. After losing the Community Shield to Crystal Palace on penalties, Liverpool began the season with seven wins, including multiple added-time victories over Arsenal. The club then signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle for a British record £125m, plus Florian Wirtz (£116m), Hugo Ekitike (£69m), Milos Kerkez (£40m), and Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m). Despite this, late defeats followed, including a 1-0 loss to Galatasaray in the Champions League and a 1-0 loss at Anfield to Manchester United, where Harry Maguire scored in the 84th minute from a Bruno Fernandes cross.
